In the United States, a court recently made an important decision about tariffs (taxes on imported goods) set by former President Donald Trump. Trump had set many tariffs on foreign products using an emergency law, but the court said most of these tariffs were illegal.

Average tariff across all imports is about 23.3% (as of May 2025). Steel and aluminum tariffs were raised to 50% in June 2025 (except UK stays at 25%). Auto parts & passenger vehicles have 25% tariffs.
For China, tariffs had been as high as 54% but lowered to around 30% in May 2025. Some special tariffs like on copper imports are at 50%. So, on average, imports face roughly 20-25% tariffs now, with
some specific goods hit harder.

The judges explained that only the U.S. Congress, not the presidentalone, has the power to put these tariffs in place. Even though the court declared the tariffs illegal, they will remain for now until October 14 while the case might move to the Supreme Court.

Trump was unhappy with this decision and said it was politically motivated and warned that removing these tariffs would hurt the American economy. This ruling is a big challenge to Trump’s trade policies, but some tariffs made under other laws are still allowed. The final outcome will depend on what the Supreme Court decides next.
